Elder Abuse and Neglect

There is no Excuse for Elder Abuse and Neglect

Older, vulnerable persons are abused and neglected by caretakers and those charged with their care, every day.

Abuse and neglect can include one or more of the following:

  • Physical abuse or injury, including
    • Bed sores
    • Broken bones
    • Torn skin and wounds
    • Depression
    • Withdrawal
    • Unwillingness to communicate
  • Neglect or failure of a caretaker to provide nourishment, hydration and health care services, leading to
    • Malnourishment/starvation
    • Emaciation
    • Dehydration/kidney injury
    • Urinary tract infection
    • Sepsis
    • Death
  • Failure to supervise and protect, leading to
    • Falling injuries
    • Wandering, that leads to even more injuries such as
      • Drownings
      • Auto injuries,
      • Animal attacks, etc.
    • Medication mistakes and overdoses

Sometimes these caretakers may be governmental, or may be supervised by governmental entities. Sometimes, they are private outpatient or even inpatient providers. Abuse and neglect can take place at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes and hospitals. It can be perpetrated in the elderly person’s own home by sitters, nursing aides, nurses, social workers or custodians selected by governmental agencies or courts.
